Sleep Apnea Notifications already available on Apple Watch
From today, a new Apple Watch feature comes to Brazil that helps identify evidence of moderate to severe sleep apnea. In order to offer the Sleep Apnea Notification Appeal, Apple got a license for medical equipment from the National Health Surveillance Agency1.
Sleep apnea is a serious disorder that causes repetitive episodes of breathing breaks during sleep. This condition is estimated to affect more than one billion people worldwide and, in most cases, is not diagnosed. If not treated, sleep apnea can have serious health consequences, such as greater risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes and heart problems.
To detect sleep apnea, Apple Watch uses the accelerometer to record small pulse movements during sleep associated with normal breathing patterns interruptions. This follow -up is done with the new Apple Watch metric called respiratory disorders. Even if some of these changes are considered normal, it is important to follow up as they help to evaluate sleep quality and, if they occur frequently on several nights, may be associated with sleep apnea. Night respiratory disorders are recorded in the iPhone and iPad Health App and classified as ups or lows. These records can be consulted for periods of one month, six months or one year.
